Former NHL Player-Turned-Serial Entrepreneur Trevor Koverko Launches Web3 AI Data Protocol 'Sapien'

Trevor Koverko, a former NHL hockey player from Canada and a prolific blockchain entrepreneur, has once again captured the blockchain industry's attention with the launch of his Web3-powered AI learning data protocol, Sapien. Renowned for co-founding and scaling blockchain ventures like Polymath, Polymesh, and Tokens.com, Koverko's newest endeavor highlights his unwavering commitment to tech innovation.

In a talk with cryptocurrency-focused media outlet Beluga, Koverko reminisced about his formative years, stating, "Hockey was my world in youth. Drafted into the OHL at 15 and then by the NHL's New York Rangers at 18, I found a deeper interest in understanding systems, which led me to blockchain." His hockey career ended due to a traumatic brain injury from a car accident. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, he shared, "It was painful but also liberating. For the first time, I could explore who I truly was."

Pioneering the Security Token Market Through Polymath

Koverko's blockchain journey began in 2012 in Silicon Valley. "It felt like witnessing the early internet days," he said. "Amid chaos, I saw vision and potential." While the industry was focused on utility tokens, he turned his attention to security tokens (STOs). "There was no infrastructure for real-world assets. Polymath aimed to build it," he explained.

Although Polymath achieved corporate success, Koverko opted to step back, recognizing his strengths in early-stage startups. "I'm someone who takes an idea from zero to one, not from one to ten. Once the company was established, I hired a CEO and began pondering my next challenge," he said. This led him to focus on the intersection of artificial intelligence and blockchain.

Sapien: Solving AI Learning Data Problems

Teaming up with former Coinbase Base creator Rowan Stone, Koverko co-founded Sapien, a protocol designed to address AI data learning inefficiencies. "AI's intelligence is based on its learning data. However, structured data production is fundamentally flawed," Koverko explained. "I envisioned a network where people actively create structured data and are rewarded with tokens." He added that his partnership with Stone stemmed from mutual trust and a shared vision in the Web3 community.

Sapien has already secured clients like Toyota, Lenovo, Amazon, and Baidu. Koverko highlighted the company's strategy, emphasizing, "We didn’t lead with ‘crypto.’ Instead, we showcased our data quality, faster annotation, and refined feedback systems. These tangible results built strong relationships."

AI and Crypto: A Powerful Intersection

Koverko believes the convergence of AI and cryptocurrency offers unprecedented synergies, especially in addressing the 'alignment' problem requiring human intervention. "Crypto can engineer incentive structures, adding new layers to labeling, model governance, and output verification," he noted. "Since encountering blockchain in 2012, this is the most compelling fusion I’ve seen."

As an investor, Koverko prefers practical, infrastructure-focused protocols. "Ethereum(ETH) and Bitcoin(BTC) are platforms I’d want to build on myself. Conversely, I’m not enthusiastic about meme coins," he remarked.

Balancing the Future of AI: Optimism vs. Caution

On AI's future, Koverko weighed in, "It’s wisdom versus power. If we design AI for human-centered outcomes, we could achieve a future like ‘The Jetsons’—with flying cars, robot maids, and automated homes. But reckless profit pursuits risk a ‘Terminator’-like dystopia." He stressed Sapien’s mission is to maintain this balance, adding, "The future isn't yet written, but together, we’re writing it."
