# Kakao Advises Enhanced Security for KakaoTalk Following SK Telecom SIM Data Breach
Kakao recommends KakaoTalk users improve their account security settings after the recent SK Telecom SIM card data leak.
On November 1, Kakao advised users to perform a security check, enable two-factor authentication (2FA), and activate region-based login restrictions to enhance safety.
"We have deployed processes to detect and block abnormal or suspicious login attempts automatically," the company stated. "Users are notified promptly via alerts and must complete additional verification steps. These measures ensure that user accounts remain secure under regular conditions."
Addressing concerns from the breach, Kakao is also improving security guidance to enhance the KakaoTalk experience.
# Detailed Security Measures
By running an account security diagnostic through KakaoTalk, users can detect anomalies and adjust settings as recommended.
Two-factor authentication adds an extra security layer, preventing unauthorized access even with the account credentials. For example, logging into KakaoTalk on a PC with an account ID and password triggers a confirmation message sent to the mobile device. Users confirm the login by selecting "Yes, log me in," completing the 2FA process.
If an unrequested login confirmation message is received, users can block the attempt by selecting "No, it’s not me," and immediately changing their password via the "Protect My Info" section.
The region-based login restriction feature allows users to block login attempts from countries where they don't typically access their account.
# Enhanced KakaoTalk Security Monitoring
In response to the SK Telecom SIM card data breach, Kakao is strengthening its security monitoring for KakaoTalk. The company urged users to review and update their security settings to mitigate potential risks from the incident.
Kakao added, "We ask all users to verify their security settings to prevent damage linked to this breach. We are committed to providing a safe service environment, ensuring user trust and security."
