Tristan Thompson sues World Mobile for $2M over crypto deal
- Retired NBA star alleges breach and unauthorized use of likeness in Delaware court
- Dispute centers on $2M WMTX token payments and contract termination
On May 30, 2026 (UTC), Bitget reported that Tristan Thompson filed a $2 million lawsuit against World Mobile Group in Delaware Chancery Court, alleging breach of contract and ongoing unauthorized use of his image after a failed endorsement deal involving WMTX tokens. The claim arises from a May 2025 agreement naming Thompson brand ambassador and “Chief Digital Equity Officer” for the UK-based crypto telecom company, with quarterly WMTX token payments totaling up to $1 million per year over two years. Thompson promoted World Mobile on social media and at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025.
The dispute began when World Mobile claimed they overpaid Thompson in tokens. He proposed crediting the overage against future payments, but the company refused, issued a material breach notice, and terminated his contract in March 2026. World Mobile alleges the termination was justified because Thompson failed to return excess tokens and sold some of his holdings. Thompson’s lawsuit maintains this did not amount to a material breach and further claims that World Mobile continued using his name and image post-termination.
Seeking unpaid compensation and a court injunction barring further use of his likeness, Thompson argues that monetary damages are inadequate due to ongoing reputational harm.
Bitget also notes the WMTX token trades below 5 cents, far from its 98-cent peak in February 2022. The case underscores persistent legal and regulatory risks in blockchain—especially regarding celebrity endorsements, token compensation, and enforcing publicity rights.
