Barret Zoph Named DeepMind VP as Lab Faces 2:1 Talent Exodus

Barret Zoph, co-founder of Thinking Machines Lab and former OpenAI executive, has been named Vice President of Research at Google DeepMind, according to Fortune on August 27, 2026. Zoph’s appointment comes amid significant leadership changes and an intensifying battle for talent among leading artificial intelligence companies.

DeepMind has recently undergone major upheaval. Demis Hassabis stepped back from his role as CEO to become chief scientist at Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly Chief Technology Officer, took over daily operations. Multiple influential DeepMind researchers—including Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le—have exited to launch a new venture, Discovery Loop.

Workforce instability at DeepMind grew marked in 2026. Zeki data cited by Fortune showed DeepMind’s hire-to-departure ratio fell from 12:1 in Q2 2023 to about 2:1 by Q3 2026. Most staff who left joined rival firms: 25% went to Anthropic, 21% to Meta, and 14% to OpenAI. DeepMind’s share of new hires in the EMEA region also dropped sharply, from 49% in 2022–2023 to just 18.6% in 2025–2026.

Zoph’s expertise in reinforcement learning, neural architecture search, and large-scale model training is expected to strengthen DeepMind’s foundational research. His appointment is viewed as a strategic move as the lab faces heightened competition from other AI firms aggressively recruiting talent and prioritizing enterprise applications. The company’s diminished ability to attract and retain top researchers has begun to erode its edge, particularly as DeepMind pursues product-driven initiatives such as Gemini.

Current data suggests that DeepMind’s leadership transition and talent departures have weakened its operational capacity and innovation output. While Zoph’s hiring brings renewed technical credibility, uncertainty lingers over the lab’s long-term stability and retention.
