  • Billions in valid transactions lost, investor trust shaken

On August 17, 2026, Cryptopolitan reported that Harmony Protocol rolled back its blockchain to erase $4 billion in forged ONE tokens after an attack, resetting the network to its state as of August 11, 2026, and triggering a rapid price collapse and significant disruption among users.

The attacker exploited a vulnerability in cross-shard receipt validation, minting unauthorized ONE tokens equal to 26% of the network’s total supply. These forged tokens were distributed across exchanges, trading pools, and smart contracts. Harmony’s blockchain was reverted to its exact state on August 11, 2026, at 23:25:37 UTC, effectively discarding all subsequent activity—including legitimate transactions—as the team concluded that alternatives such as selective burning, blacklisting, or chain migration were impractical or too disruptive. The mandatory client software update, version 2026.1.2, was released to enforce the rollback and prevent acceptance of any compromised block data.

The influx of forged tokens immediately sent ONE’s market price plunging to around $0.0007. The rapid inflation and uncertainty surrounding Harmony’s response fueled speculation and increased the risk of capital flight, prompting exchanges and trading platforms to suspend activity in reaction to the network instability.

In the wake of the rollback, Harmony began cooperating with centralized exchanges, cross-chain bridges, and law enforcement to recover stolen funds, as most of the fraudulent tokens moved to third-party wallets or trading venues. Erasing nearly six days of blockchain history—including valid transfers and DeFi transactions—has damaged user trust and renewed questions about the platform’s governance and stability.

The fallout from the exploit and rollback brings immediate risks to Harmony’s staking, bridge operations, and DeFi ecosystem. Investors and the broader market now face elevated uncertainty, and the validator and governance community is under increasing scrutiny, according to Cryptopolitan.
