Tristan Thompson Sues World Mobile for $2M in Crypto Endorsement Dispute
- Thompson accuses World Mobile of wrongful contract termination and continued unauthorized use of his image.
- Case spotlights major risks for celebrities endorsing crypto brands, especially with volatile token compensation.
On May 30, 2026 (UTC), CoinDesk reported that former NBA star Tristan Thompson filed a $2 million lawsuit against U.K.-based crypto telecom company World Mobile Group in Delaware’s Chancery Court. Thompson alleges the company unjustly terminated his brand ambassador contract following a payment error involving its WMTX token. He also claims World Mobile continued using his name and likeness in marketing materials without his authorization.
Thompson, known for both his NBA career and high-profile media presence, signed the two-year contract in May 2025. The agreement promised quarterly distributions of WMTX tokens, valued up to $1 million annually, in exchange for promotional support and public appearances. According to World Mobile, Thompson failed to return over-transferred tokens after a payment mishap and sold some of the excess holdings, leading the company to terminate the deal in March 2026.
Thompson’s legal team argues that he offered a reasonable solution by proposing to credit the overpayment toward future distributions. They contend that the contract termination was a pretext, not a material breach. The lawsuit seeks damages, unpaid compensation, interest, and a court injunction against further use of Thompson’s image and identity by World Mobile.
This case highlights the complex legal and reputational challenges facing celebrities in the crypto endorsement space, particularly around fluctuating token values and ambiguous contract terms.
