On November 3, 2026 (UTC), Reuters reported that Binance experienced a $6.3 billion hack attributed by the FBI to North Korea’s Lazarus Group, marking the largest crypto exchange theft to date. The breach triggered over $4.7 billion in user withdrawals, mostly in USDT, and renewed scrutiny of centralized exchange security. Binance co-CEO Richard Teng announced at Hong Kong Fintech Week that the company had replaced about 95% of stolen assets from its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and corporate reserves, assuring stable operations and user fund safety.

Binance stated it allocated approximately $6.34 billion to cover customer losses in full but has not yet released an independent audit or detailed proof of reserves to substantiate its claims. PBS NewsHour noted that the theft occurred primarily during a 20-minute window across ten blockchains, setting an industry record. The company explained the breach stemmed from a compromised engineer’s laptop, but found no evidence of wallet private keys being exposed.

Stablecoin issuers and blockchain platforms, including Tether, Circle, Ripple, Arbitrum, and Optimism, froze roughly $2.85 billion of the stolen funds, according to CNBC. Ongoing investigations and legal proceedings may delay the return of frozen assets to users. Binance continues to collaborate with law enforcement agencies, other exchanges, and token issuers to trace and recover funds.

The FBI named North Korea’s Lazarus Group as responsible for the breach. North Korean authorities denied involvement after attribution and verification by blockchain analysis firms.

As of November 3, 2026, 16:09 UTC, Tether USDt (USDT) is trading at $0.999, with a -0.008% change in 24-hour trading volume. USD Coin (USDC) is trading at $1, with a 0.006% change. Ripple USD (RLUSD) is trading at $1, with a 0.018% change. Arbitrum (ARB) is trading at $0.159, with a 0.334% change, according to market data.
