Google lets UK publishers block AI search use after CMA order
- CMA directive compels Google to grant UK publishers control over AI-powered search participation.
- New Search Console opt-out tools strengthen publisher leverage in content licensing decisions.
On June 4, 2026 (UTC), CoinDesk reported that Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) required Google to let UK publishers block their content from being used in generative AI search features like AI Overviews and AI Mode—a global regulatory first.
To comply with the CMA’s decision, Google rolled out new Search Console controls for select UK publishers. These tools allow publishers to exclude their content from generative AI search products while keeping it available in standard web results.
Publishers now have access to analytics showing how their content appears in AI-powered search products, giving greater transparency and leverage when negotiating licensing and distribution with Google.
The opt-out feature does not affect placement or ranking in traditional search results, ensuring publishers maintain web traffic while deciding whether their content appears in Google’s AI tools.
The CMA’s action follows its October 2025 move granting Google “strategic market status,” enabling the regulator to enforce measures intended to improve publisher bargaining power and fair competition.
Google’s AI opt-out controls have launched with a limited group of UK publishers, with plans to expand globally. According to CoinDesk, the new regime is a significant moment for how content is managed across emerging AI-driven search platforms.
