THORChain Halts 10-Chain Swaps After Bug Delays Binance Hackers’ Laundering
- THORChain pauses swaps across ten blockchains after Ethereum bug exposes funds.
- Emergency shutdown interrupts North Korean hackers’ laundering of Binance stolen assets.
On November 2, 2026, Cointelegraph reported that THORChain halted all swap activities across ten blockchains—including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Tron—after an Ethereum block reorganization exposed a critical bug with major exploitation risk. The flaw enabled the protocol to refund users for deposits that never arrived, potentially letting attackers drain THORChain liquidity pools.
The incident began at 11:34 UTC when an Ethereum reorg reversed a 10 ETH deposit, even after THORChain credited it to the vault. This triggered a duplicate refund and an automated protocol-wide pause, securing the network against further vulnerabilities.
According to Chainalysis, North Korean hackers linked to the recent $6.3 billion Binance exploit attempted to launder stolen funds through THORChain, but the emergency halt temporarily blocked their efforts. The pause froze all cross-chain swaps, stopping both legitimate users and criminal actors from moving assets during the security event.
Following the shutdown, U.S. law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, advised THORChain node operators and DeFi platforms to block transactions related to wallets associated with North Korean cybercriminals. However, founder John-Paul Thorbjornsen emphasized THORChain’s commitment to a neutral, permissionless infrastructure. Thorbjornsen warned that conceding to enforcement would end unencumbered and neutral settlement, undermining the protocol’s core principle of open, censorship-resistant finance.
The shutdown highlighted operational risks in cross-chain protocols, especially those relying on external consensus and real-time chain reorg detection. The episode intensified industry debates over strict neutrality in DeFi when criminal activity and regulatory scrutiny emerge.
RUNE, THORChain’s native token, experienced volatility as market participants weighed the protocol’s fast bug containment against longer-term reputational and compliance challenges.
As of November 2, 2026, 08:09 UTC, THORChain (RUNE) trades at $0.521, down 16.74% in the past 24 hours, per latest market data.
