Binance Hit by $6.3B Hack Amid AI, Social Exploit
- Attackers used social engineering and AI tools to steal $6.3 billion in crypto from Binance.
- Over $3 billion in assets remain missing, sparking market shock and custody debate.
On November 4, 2026 (UTC), BleepingComputer reported that Binance suffered a $6.3 billion crypto hack after attackers, allegedly tied to North Korea, infiltrated the exchange through social engineering and technical exploits. Hackers compromised Binance engineers using fake job interviews and malware, seizing credentials and container deployment tokens. They then leveraged an internal AI tool to bypass wallet-signing controls, executing unauthorized transfers within minutes. The attackers moved 233.46 million XRP and additional assets—including bitcoin, Solana, and Optimism—from five wallets, while evading routine security checks.
Binance immediately froze or recovered about $2.85 billion in assets and restored 98% of customer balances, according to Odaily. Still, Elliptic and TRM Labs estimated that at least $3.18 billion, mostly in bitcoin and ether, remains unrecovered. Hackers laundered the stolen funds through self-minted tokens, chained cross-chain bridges, and hundreds of addresses across eleven blockchains. Chainalysis detailed the laundering process, noting automated fund movement using addresses loaded with exact amounts—sometimes a single TRX—to avoid detection.
The attack triggered sharp volatility in cryptocurrency markets. Bitwise observed bitcoin and ether prices plunging by 5–6% during the incident, though both rebounded quickly, with bitcoin later topping $77,000. Meanwhile, Cryptopolitan reported that Binance faced net outflows totaling $4.72 billion as shaken customers withdrew funds. Despite this, $2.7 billion was redeposited once withdrawals resumed.
The scale of the hack reignited debates over exchange custody risks versus institutional or self-custody solutions. Interviews by Cryptopolitan and Grayscale highlighted institutional investor calls for regulatory oversight and frequent solvency checks. Experts, however, noted that even rigorous checks cannot eliminate systemic threats.
In response, Binance introduced stronger AI-driven monitoring and commissioned independent audits to reinforce internal security, pledging improved safeguards. As BleepingComputer noted, the effectiveness of these measures remains unproven.
As of November 4, 2026, 03:09 UTC, Bitcoin (BTC) trades at $75,746.72, down 1.30% over 24 hours. Ethereum (ETH) is priced at $2,228.54, down 0.96%. XRP (XRP) stands at $1.243, down 0.33%. TRON (TRX) trades at $0.322, up 0.38%.
