  • Blockstream and Liquid Federation restore full 1:1 LBTC-Bitcoin backing after September’s $320M exploit
  • Technical fixes and audits completed, raising key questions for bridge trust in Bitcoin ecosystem

On November 3, 2026, Crypto.news reported that the Liquid Federation’s sidechain token LBTC is once again fully backed 1:1 by Bitcoin, following remediation of a major exploit. On September 6, attackers exploited a cache key flaw in the Elements software that powers Liquid, allowing 4,000 unbacked LBTC to be minted and redeemed, draining approximately $320 million worth of BTC from reserves.

Most stolen bitcoin was returned after the attacker voluntarily sent back around 3,400 BTC but retained 598 BTC as a bug bounty, following Blockstream’s refusal to pay ransom. Blockstream restored the missing funds through four deposits, closing the deficit by November 2 and rebalancing the Liquid Network’s reserves to match all circulating LBTC. Blockstream CEO Adam Back provided on-chain proof and supporting screenshots confirming reserves were fully restored.

In response, the Liquid Federation implemented several technical measures. These included disabling and hardening the flawed cache, requiring peg-out authorization keys to be refreshed and kept on cold hardware wallets, and enforcing stricter consensus rules. Independent security audits are now complete, though some restrictions on federation peg-outs may still be in effect. Further improvements in governance and transparency are planned.

The exploit did not involve theft of private keys or multisig wallets but exposed a systemic accounting flaw. Adam Back noted the vulnerability was likely discovered through open-source GitHub code, possibly using AI tools, and cautioned developers against relying on AI-generated code suggestions due to growing security threats.

For the broader Bitcoin ecosystem, this incident illustrated how a single bug in a federated bridge can undermine confidence in pegged tokens and multisig safeguards, raising questions about reserve transparency and operational security. The event’s rapid BTC reserve drain and partial ransom stirred concerns about the resilience of bridge mechanisms, and its impact has prompted institutional users to reassess counterparty risk.

As of November 3, 2026, 18:10 UTC, Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at $77,727.53—a 0.625% change in 24-hour trading volume, according to CoinMarketCap.
