  • BIS-led effort demonstrates regulatory equivalence and under two-minute settlement times for tokenized payments
  • $1 million settled across six currencies with real-value transactions

On July 31, 2026, CoinDesk reported that the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), together with 28 central banks and financial institutions, settled $1 million in real-value tokenized cross-border payments during the trial phase of Project Agorá. The project processed transactions in six major currencies, employing tokenized versions of central bank reserves and commercial bank deposits, with settlement times averaging around one minute and twenty seconds.

Project Agorá showed that tokenized reserves and deposits processed on its platform were recognized as legally equivalent to conventional account-based money across all participating jurisdictions. This ensured settlement finality within existing regulatory frameworks, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. The Bank of Korea confirmed interoperability by connecting its domestic Project Hangang platform to Agorá, allowing for seamless payments between national and cross-border systems.

Central banks and private-sector participants intend to conduct further tests and expand use case scenarios to refine technical and operational standards before considering large-scale deployment, according to MK.
