  • Iza admits orchestrating attempted abduction linked to $245 million Bitcoin theft
  • Physical attacks on crypto holders see global surge, losses hit $101 million in 2026

On June 4, 2026 (UTC), CoinDesk reported that Adam Iza, a 25-year-old California crypto businessman known as “The Godfather,” pleaded guilty in federal court to orchestrating the violent attempted kidnapping of a Connecticut couple. The case arose from an August 2024 incident in which Iza directed six men to stage a car crash and attack the couple. Law enforcement, including an off-duty FBI agent, intervened quickly and prevented the abduction. The couple were targeted as parents of a man accused of stealing 4,100 Bitcoin (valued at approximately $245 million) through social engineering. Iza admitted he planned to leverage the parents to recover the stolen crypto assets.

The crime reflects a broader trend of rising “wrench attacks,” where criminals use physical force or intimidation to compel victims to transfer cryptocurrency. CertiK, a blockchain security firm, reported a 41% year-over-year increase in these attacks in 2026, with global losses reaching $101 million in the first four months. This escalation has prompted increased law enforcement attention and new focus on violent crypto-related incidents.

Iza faces parallel prosecution in California for wire fraud, conspiracy against rights, tax evasion, and schemes involving off-duty law enforcement officers for intimidation and extortion. Additional offenses include fraudulent theft of up to $37 million from Meta Platforms. Prosecutors seek a sentence of up to 35 years across both jurisdictions. Iza’s Connecticut sentencing is scheduled for August 12, 2026.

Federal authorities signal a stronger response to violent crypto crime. The growing number of “wrench attacks,” increasingly coordinated across regions, underscores shifting legal priorities and expanded scrutiny in the cryptocurrency sector.

As of June 4, 2026, 08:09 UTC, Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at $63,470.97, with a -5.336% change in 24-hour volume, according to CoinMarketCap.
