# Trump Pushes Global Tariff War Amid Rising Economic Concerns Among Americans
WASHINGTON—In the midst of President Donald Trump’s aggressive push for a global tariff war, a new poll indicates growing economic concerns among Americans. According to a survey released on the 13th by the Economist and polling firm YouGov, 48% of respondents believe the U.S. economy is deteriorating.
The poll, conducted from the 9th to the 11th of this month with a sample of 1,699 adults across the United States, has a margin of error of ±3.2 percentage points. Only 19% of respondents felt that the economy is improving, while 26% said it remained about the same.
When asked whether the United States is currently in a recession, 37% of respondents answered affirmatively, while 32% disagreed.
Regarding accountability for the current economic situation, 44% pointed to President Trump, while 34% blamed former President Joe Biden. Opinions on Trump’s economic policies were divided, with 47% opposing and 43% supporting them.
A significant 70% of respondents anticipated that consumer prices would rise if tariffs were increased, a figure consistent with a Reuters-Ipsos poll released the previous day.
In terms of tariffs on neighboring Mexico, 51% of respondents were opposed to the 25% tariff, while 34% supported it. For tariffs on Canada, opposition stood at 54%, with 31% in favor.
Regarding President Trump's favorability, 50% of respondents held an unfavorable view compared to 47% who viewed him favorably, within the margin of error.
As for Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), leading federal downsizing efforts, he was viewed unfavorably by 53% of respondents, compared to 41% who held a favorable view.
Similar results were reflected in a Quinnipiac University poll conducted from the 6th to the 10th with a sample of 1,198 respondents and a margin of error of ±2.8 percentage points. In this poll, 54% of respondents stated they did not support President Trump’s economic policies, while 41% said they did.
