# OpenAI Launches Actions Platform for Building Autonomous AI Agents
San Francisco—OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has unveiled a platform aimed at developing AI agents capable of performing specific tasks autonomously.
On October 11, OpenAI announced the release of its 'Responses API,' a platform that allows businesses to create AI bots designed to handle tasks such as financial analysis and customer service.
The Responses API is a new tool that leverages OpenAI models to help developers and businesses build AI agents that can operate independently. This tool enables companies to develop customized AI agents that can perform web searches, scan company files, and navigate websites.
"People can now interact with AI agents," said Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of OpenAI. "These agents can reference files, search the web, and use computers."
The platform is set to be offered as a paid service, with 2 million corporate customers already using ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, and Edu. The launch of this platform comes amid increasing competition in the AI agent market.
Recently, Chinese AI startup Monica drew attention online by unveiling an AI agent named 'Manus.' The startup claims that Manus can think independently, plan, and accomplish complex tasks to deliver perfect results. Monica touted Manus as 'the second DeepMind,' and claimed it outperformed OpenAI models in AI agent validation tests.
According to The Wall Street Journal, AI agent technology has emerged as a new wave of innovation in the AI industry since the release of ChatGPT at the end of 2022.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has described this year as "the year AI agents are being seriously incorporated into work."
In response, OpenAI launched the 'Operator' AI agent in January, which can browse the internet to purchase groceries or create expense reports. In February, OpenAI introduced 'Deep Research,' an AI agent capable of performing complex research tasks on the internet.
OpenAI is also reported to be preparing to release AI agents with Ph.D.-level capabilities, anticipated to cost several million won per month in subscription fees.
