# Trump Threatens to Raise Tariffs on Canadian Cars Over Long-standing Trade Disputes WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump announced on April 11 (local time) that he would significantly increase tariffs on Canadian automobiles entering the United States if Canada does not address its long-standing trade barriers. Posting on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump stated, “If Canada doesn’t lower its long-standing and severe tariffs, I will substantially increase tariffs on cars entering the U.S. from Canada starting April 2.” He warned that such action could permanently close Canada’s automobile manufacturing industry. President Trump also addressed Ontario's response to U.S. tariffs by imposing a 25% export tax on electricity sent to the United States. “Based on Ontario imposing a 25% tariff on electricity entering the U.S., I have instructed the Secretary of Commerce to add an additional 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum coming from Canada, raising it to 50%,” Trump declared. The tariffs will take effect on April 12. This move is in response to Canada's retaliatory measures against U.S. tariffs, signifying that Canadian steel and aluminum will face a cumulative 50% tariff. Furthermore, President Trump stated, “I will soon declare an ‘Electric National Emergency’ in regions threatened by Canada, allowing the U.S. to swiftly take necessary actions to mitigate Canada’s unfair threats.” Trump demanded that Canada immediately abolish the 250-390% anti-American dairy tariffs. Earlier, President Trump announced a proclamation last month enforcing a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum without exceptions, starting April 12. “Canada pays almost nothing for national security and relies on U.S. military protection,” Trump argued. “We provide over $200 billion annually in subsidies to Canada. This situation is unsustainable.” Concluding his statements, Trump suggested, “The only solution is for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States; this would make tariffs and all other issues completely disappear.” soleco@yna.co.kr
