# Kraken Secures EMI License from UK FCA, Enhances Cryptocurrency Services **By Jaehyung Park, Special Correspondent** Kraken, a U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange, has acquired an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from the United Kingdom's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This regulatory milestone enables Kraken to improve its electronic money issuance and transaction services in the UK, multiple media outlets reported on October 11th. With the newly granted license, Kraken plans to enhance its collaboration with UK financial institutions and expand its range of services for British users. According to FCA research, over seven million adults, approximately 12% of the UK population, currently hold cryptocurrency. Kraken has noted a significant rise in trading volumes based on the British Pound (GBP), indicating the UK's growing importance as a key market for the cryptocurrency exchange. Prior to receiving FCA approval, Kraken had secured regulatory approval under the European Union's Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), establishing a legal framework for offering derivative trading services within the EU. Kraken’s compliance with regulatory requirements in both the UK and European markets strengthens the link between traditional finance and the cryptocurrency industry. Additionally, Kraken is aiming for an initial public offering (IPO) in the first quarter of 2026. The company is preparing for its IPO, anticipating a more favorable regulatory environment following Donald Trump’s presidency. However, the IPO plans are not yet finalized and remain subject to future changes.
